Litecoin vs Bitcoin: what actually differs, and what does not

Block time, supply cap and hashing algorithm differ. Security model, monetary policy shape and use case largely do not. An honest comparison.

Litecoin has 2.5-minute blocks, an 84 million supply cap and Scrypt hashing; Bitcoin has 10-minute blocks, 21 million and SHA-256. Their security models and monetary designs are otherwise closely related.

Litecoin launched as a deliberate variation on Bitcoin rather than a rejection of it, and the differences are narrower than either its supporters or its critics usually claim.

What genuinely differs

Block time

Litecoin targets 2.5 minutes against Bitcoin’s 10. You get a first confirmation roughly four times sooner. Whether you get settlement sooner is a different question: a single Litecoin confirmation represents about a quarter of the work of a Bitcoin one, so a merchant wanting equivalent assurance waits for roughly four times as many confirmations, arriving at a similar wall-clock time.

Supply

84 million versus 21 million, on the same halving schedule. Four times the coins at, all else equal, a quarter of the per-coin price. The shape of the monetary policy is identical.

Hashing algorithm

Scrypt rather than SHA-256. The original intent was memory-hardness to keep mining on general-purpose hardware. Scrypt ASICs arrived regardless, so the practical outcome is a separate hardware ecosystem rather than a more decentralised one. What does not differ

Both are proof-of-work chains with fixed supply caps, halving schedules, and no smart contract platform in the Ethereum sense. Both settle transfers of a native asset and do that well. The design philosophy is shared.

The difference that matters most

Hashrate. Bitcoin’s network is secured by vastly more computational work than Litecoin’s. For an attacker, the cost of accumulating enough hashrate to reorganise history scales with that. This is the substantive security distinction between the two, and it is the one least often discussed, because it is less interesting than block times.
